Waste management is a group of activities, decisions and measures aimed at:  
  1. Preventing the generation of waste,
  2. Preparing waste for reuse,
  3. Recycling,
  4. Other recovery procedures, such as energy recovery, and
  5. Waste disposal.  

Human health must not be threatened, and procedures and/or methods that could cause damage to the environment must be avoided in waste management. In particular, attention must be paid to avoiding the following:
  • Risk of sea, water, soil and air contamination,
  • Noise pollution,
  • Odours,
  • Threats to flora and fauna,
  • Negative impact on areas of cultural, historical, aesthetic and natural value,
  • Explosions and fires.
