Promotional activities as part of “Put the Right Thing in the Right Place” campaign
7 September 2020
An event was held today at three locations in the city – Ban Josip Jelačić Square, Cvjetni Trg square and Zrinjevac Park – as part of the “Put the Right Thing in the Right Place” project. This involved numerous educational and informational activities organised by the City of Zagreb in order to raise the awareness of the general public regarding sustainable waste management.

The activities were introduced to the attendees by Deputy Mayor,  Asst. Prof. Olivera
Majić, PhD, who underlined that the most important thing is for everyone to work on changing their habits and the way we think about waste, which can certainly be a useful raw material. “Changing people’s habits is the hardest and longest-lasting process.
With our slogan, ‘Put the Right Thing in the Right Place’, we are making it clear that we are recycling and reusing waste”, said the Deputy Mayor, adding that this day in particular was selected because it is the Croatian Waters Day.

In conclusion, Deputy Mayor Majić emphasised that circular economy is about everyone accepting their own responsibility, from the manufacturers to the end users in the supply chain, which ultimately includes all of us. “By continually implementing this campaign, we will work together
on changing people’s habits and contributing to making our Zagreb cleaner, greener and more competitive – the city of happy people.”

All of the activities have been designed as a way for the citizens to get informed and educated about the importance of separate waste collection and how this is done, but also with a view of motivating them to become more personally engaged in the process.

Citizens had the opportunity to enjoy musical performances, various games, wheel of fortune, bubble football, and archery. People were handed out waste sorting bags and there were education sessions about environmental protection. One could also try their luck in a prize-winning game about waste sorting.
The youngest attendees could enjoy a corner specially dedicated to them, where they had colouring books and games – Ekodrom and Ekoforija – designed to teach players about environmental protection.

This project is worth HRK 4,945,708.54 in total, of which HRK 3,600,000.00 pertains to grants co-financed by the European Union under the Cohesion Fund, Operational Program Competitiveness and Cohesion for 2014-2020.

This project is part of the City of Zagreb’s efforts to become a leader when it comes to separate waste collection and, in doing so, to bring Croatia closer to the creation of a comprehensive waste management system similar to the systems used in the EU.
