Introducing separate biowaste collection services

Introducing separate biowaste collection services
15 February 2019 - After introducing the public service of waste paper collection, Čistoća has organised separate collection of yet another type of biodegradable municipal waste. From now on, biowaste will also be collected separately in each household in the City of Zagreb.

Citizens living at family homes in Podsljeme, Brezovica and Maksimir will be the first to receive biowaste bins, starting from Monday, 18 February. Afterwards, the service will be expanded across the City of Zagreb. Biowaste bins are brown and they come with an informative leaflet.

By developing a responsible approach to separate biowaste collection, all of us:
  • Develop good eco-friendly habits
  • Reduce the volume of waste disposed of at landfills
  • Produce useful compost for green areas
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment.

The following waste is to be disposed in the brown biowaste bins:
  • Kitchen waste (fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, teabags, leftover bread, leaves of lettuce, cabbage, chard and alike),
  • Garden waste or green waste (wilted flowers, twigs, grass and hedge clippings, pot soil, fruit and vegetable scraps and alike),
  • Small quantities of other biological waste (tree bark, hair, sawdust, paper tissues, pine needles, small quantities of paper used to wrap kitchen scraps).

The following waste IS NOT TO BE DISPOSED in the brown bins:
  •  Leftover thermally processed food
  •  Meat, fish, bones, skin
  •  Dairy products, oils and fats
  •  Ash, packaging (cardboard, glass, plastic), rubber, hazardous waste
  •  Stained or lacquered wood
  •  Clothes, cigarettes and other similar material

Due to sanitary requirements, the citizens are kindly asked to put their biodegradable waste into the biodegradable waste bags, paper bags or to wrap it in some paper before disposing it in communal brown bins.

Citizens have a duty to use the public service provided to them, to enable access to the bins at the time of scheduled collection and to safeguard the containers from damage or theft.
Biodegradable waste will be collected once a week in each city district.
After family homes, the bins will be distributed to citizens living in multi-apartment buildings and using communal bins. They will receive 30L biodegradable bags at their home address, which will be disposed in the brown bin (26 bags free of charge for 6 months, i.e. 4 bags per month).
